What avoidance can look like

Anxiety that doesn't go away can start to interfere with daily activities (NIMH). Often it shows up in plans: the ones you skip, cut short or dread for days.

  • Skipping plans

Saying no, cancelling late, or finding a reason to stay home.

  • Leaving early

Getting through part of something, then needing to get out.

  • Rehearsing

Running a conversation over and over, before and after it happens.

  • Checking

Re-reading the message, re-checking the plan, asking for reassurance.

If a group sounds hard, say so

Feeling nervous about a group is understandable, and it's a fair thing to bring up on the free call. Questions you could ask:

  • How many people are usually in a group?
  • Do I have to talk in my first session?
  • What happens on the first morning?
  • What if I need a short break?
Practice examples

Checking a worried thought

  1. Notice the thought

If I ask a question, everyone will judge me.
  2. Look at it

What makes that feel likely? What else could happen?
  3. Find a fairer view

I can be nervous and still ask. I don't know what they'll think.

Small steps toward something avoided

  1. Step 1Look up the store's quiet hours
  2. Step 2Walk to the entrance and back
  3. Step 3Go in for one item
  4. Step 4Stay for a full shop

Approaches described by the National Institute of Mental Health, such as questioning automatic thoughts and gradual exposure. Whether and how they're used is part of your plan with your clinician.

What changed in a similar program

In a study of 66 adults in an intensive outpatient program, the group's average anxiety score went from the moderate range at the start to the minimal range at the end.

That program met three days a week for three hours a day.

From first call to group mornings

See what each step is for, from an introductory call to reviewing the clinician's recommendation.

Step 1 of 415 minutesBy phoneFree

A free call with our therapist

Choose a time that suits you. Our therapist will listen to what's been going on, explain how the program works and answer your questions.

You don't need to know what kind of care you need. Use the call to ask questions and hear what the next step could involve.

Good things to ask about

  • What the group setting is like
  • Whether I have to talk in group
  • What the first morning looks like
  • Costs and coverage
Step 2 of 445–60 minutesWith a clinicianFree to you

A clinical assessment

Your clinical assessment is free to you. We’ll talk through your needs and help you decide on the next step.

We'll talk about your symptoms, care you've tried, the support around you and your safety.

What it's for

  • Understanding what's been hard and what has helped before
  • Checking whether IOP is the right level of care
  • Explaining the recommendation in plain terms
Step 3 of 4A shared decision

Decide together

You'll go over the clinician's recommendation and ask anything you need to. There are two ways this can go.

If IOP fits

Confirm how you'll pay (your exact insurance or Medicaid plan, or self-pay), any approval your plan requires, your attendance plan and a start date.

Then: group mornings begin

If something else fits better

The clinician will explain why and talk through next steps. That might be routine outpatient care or more intensive support.

  • The full morning, 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM
  • Afternoons and evenings outside the program

What it costs, step by step

Payment options

Read both options, or choose a view. You don't need to decide how to pay to ask about care.

With Virginia Medicaid

Your exact plan, eligibility, clinical fit and any prior approval need to be checked. A plan's name alone does not confirm PathWell participation or coverage.

Questions to ask

  • Does PathWell participate in my exact plan?
  • Does my IOP care need prior approval?
  • What might I owe, if anything?

If you pay yourself

Questions to ask

  • How many treatment days are recommended for me?
  • Could a need-based scholarship help? It's considered case by case and isn't guaranteed.

Questions people ask

Questions about getting started.

What if I get anxious just booking the call?

That's okay. The call is 15 minutes, by phone, and it's for your questions. You can write down what you want to ask beforehand, and you can ask what the next step would involve.

Do I have to talk in group?

Ask our therapist what participation looks like and what the first morning involves. Those are good questions for the free call.

Is IOP the right next step for anxiety?

A clinician will look at how anxiety affects your daily life, the care you already have and your safety. IOP is one possible level of care, and the assessment helps decide the right fit.

Can I keep working?

Compare your commitments with the group schedule: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 9:00 AM–12:30 PM, plus travel time. Ask about attendance expectations before you plan a start date.
