Start a referralUnderstanding IOP
What is a mental-health IOP?
An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is structured mental-health treatment for people who need more support than routine outpatient care. You attend scheduled sessions and continue living at home.
How is IOP different from weekly therapy?
IOP offers more frequent, structured support than a typical weekly appointment. A clinician helps decide which level of care matches your needs.
How is IOP different from PHP or inpatient care?
IOP is a less intensive level of care than a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP). PHP provides a fuller treatment day without an overnight stay. Inpatient care includes staying in a treatment facility. The right choice depends on your clinical and safety needs.
How do I know if I need more support?
If symptoms are making daily life harder or your current care is not enough, talk with a qualified clinician. An assessment can help determine whether IOP or another level of care fits. Immediate danger needs emergency help.
Is mental-health IOP the same as addiction treatment?
The programs focus on different needs. Virginia Medicaid directs people whose main treatment need is substance use to addiction services. PathWell's program is for mental health in adults 18 and older. Tell the assessing clinician about all of your concerns so they can evaluate the right level of care.
Getting started
How do I get started or make a referral?
Use the referral page or call 703-659-4686. Share only the information the form requests. Keep detailed medical history, clinical records and crisis details out of the form. A referral is a request for follow-up, not a confirmed appointment or admission.
Do I need a referral from a doctor or therapist?
You can contact PathWell to ask about getting started. Ask our team and your health plan whether a provider referral or other paperwork is needed for your situation. A clinical assessment is separate from a referral.
Can I contact PathWell for myself or someone else?
Adults 18 and older, family members and referring professionals can ask for program information or use the referral page. If you are contacting us for someone else, follow the form's consent instructions. Do not send patient records or insurance details by ordinary email.
What is an assessment, and what should I bring?
An assessment is a clinical conversation about your symptoms, daily life, treatment history and care needs. Prepare a medication list and questions you want to ask. Check with PathWell about requested documents and how to share them safely before your appointment.
Where is PathWell, and can nearby communities contact you?
PathWell is at 8551 Rixlew Lane, Suite 100, Manassas, VA 20109. Adults in Manassas and nearby Prince William County communities can contact us with program questions. Contact our team before visiting to confirm an appointment or ask about access to the building.
Sessions and schedule
What happens during an IOP session?
IOP can include therapy, mental-health education and work on coping skills. Your treatment plan guides the care you receive. Ask PathWell what is included in your sessions and who will provide each part.
What should I expect at my first group?
Before your first group, ask the team about arrival time, the day's plan, group expectations and whom to speak with if you feel uncomfortable. You can write down questions ahead of time. PathWell can explain what to expect for your own start date.
Will I have to share personal details in group?
Ask the group clinician about participation expectations and privacy before you begin. Tell them if a topic feels hard to discuss. The team can explain what participation looks like and answer questions about group expectations.
What are the group schedule and office hours?
Group schedule: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 9:00 AM–12:30 PM. Office hours: Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM. Contact our team to confirm your schedule and start date. Office hours are separate from treatment times.
Can I attend IOP while working or going to college?
Compare your commitments with the group schedule: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 9:00 AM–12:30 PM. Tell the team about work, classes and travel before planning a start. Ask what attendance your treatment plan requires and whether the schedule is workable for you.
Insurance and cost
Can Virginia Medicaid cover mental-health IOP?
Virginia Medicaid has a mental-health IOP benefit for people who meet its requirements. Your eligibility, plan rules, provider participation and service authorization must be checked for your care. Medicaid enrollment alone does not confirm coverage at PathWell.
How do I find out whether my plan can be used at PathWell?
Call PathWell and your plan's member services. Ask about your exact plan, adult mental-health IOP, PathWell's participation and effective date, any approval needed, and your expected costs. Ask the team how to provide plan details safely. A benefits check is not a promise of payment.
What is prior authorization?
It is a health plan's review of a request for care under its rules. Virginia Medicaid MH-IOP uses service authorization. Ask who will request it, which services and dates are approved, and what happens if more care is needed. Approval is separate from provider participation and payment.
What do deductible, copay and coinsurance mean?
A deductible is the amount you pay for covered care before your plan starts paying, with some exceptions. A copay is a set charge for a covered service. Coinsurance is your share as a percentage. These terms do not tell you what you owe at PathWell; ask for your plan's exact terms.
Can I ask about self-pay and get a cost estimate?
$250 covers the entire IOP treatment day, 9:00 AM–12:30 PM, if you begin IOP. It is not a per-group or assessment charge.
Ask PathWell whether self-pay is appropriate for your situation, and request the expected charges before agreeing to care. If you are uninsured or are not using insurance, you generally have a right to a written good faith estimate when you request one or schedule care at least three business days ahead. Medicaid members should check the rules with the team before agreeing to self-pay.
